Metro fined for substandard goods in Russia

RBR Staff Writer Published 21 February 2012

Metro Cash & Carry, a division of Metro Group, has been fined by a regional commercial court for substandard goods storage, sales and supply.

The court has satisfied the consumer protection authority's application to impose administrative punishment on the retailer, according to the Russian Legal Information Agency.

The regulator's on-site inspection revealed that the shop purchased, stored and supplied canned diary products, canned fish and boiled sausage that did not meet government standards.

Particularly, canned sardines manufactured by the Baltic Industrial Complex did not taste the same as other such products. And some of the condensed milk and sausage did not satisfy standards.

The court has fined Metro Cash & Carry RUB50,000 ($1,700). The group operates 57 Metro Cash & Carry stores in Russia.
